What'd ya expect from an old broke down store?

Built in the late 1800’s, H. D. Gibbes & Sons began as a general merchandise store. In its early days, the store was a primary center for commerce in Learned, Mississippi and the surrounding community. Learned is now a town of fewer than 90 people. Although the railroad no longer passes through this small town and economic activity has shifted to larger towns, H. D. Gibbes & Sons is still open 6 days a week. Here you will find convenience store items such as gas, chips, hamburgers, cold beer, and soft drinks. The business has been in continuous operation and owned by the Gibbes family since day one.

In the year 2009, H. D. Gibbes & Sons began offering steak, lamb chops, and seafood served with homemade potato and vegetable casseroles on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. Live music, top-notch cuisine, and a unique dining experience draw customers in each weekend. “Community seating”, food served on paper plates, and paper towels for napkins are all part of the Gibbes experience.  “An old store that happens to serve steaks”, is the best description for H. D. Gibbes & Sons according to Chip Gibbes. Although it has been described as a “once in a lifetime, place like no other” to guests from both near and far.

Chipper, his son, and wife Susan, along with Mary Bell Gibbes (Chipper’s Mother) now operate the store and restaurant. Chipper and Susan’s children (Henry and Kirk) represent the 5th generation of the Gibbes family that have been involved with H.D. Gibbes & Sons.

Had dinner at Gibbes and Sons General Store in Learned, MS. One of the best steaks I ever had!

I am not exaggerating when I claim that we seriously loved everything, especially the red fish. It was seasoned well and cooked to a flaky perfection. My favorite side was the yellow squash side with smothered onions. The sweet potato with syrup, butter and brown sugar came in a close second. While I can’t imagine any of you will be in that neck of the woods anytime soon, keep Gibbes on your radar. It’s a hidden treasure.

I wouldn’t take anything for our visit to Learned. It was truly a wonderful experience, and I highly recommend it to our visitors to Vicksburg, as a side trip. The steaks alone were worth the drive, service was excellent, and the atmosphere was the icing on the cake.
